An Extremely Realistic Kalimba in Ableton Live

Add realistic kalimba sounds, as well as far-out-of-this-world new sounds to your music!

Pictured below is the BF Kalimba Time Instrument Rack. I’ve sampled every note of the kalimba 3 times and set the instruments to playback in round-robin fashion. This means every time you play a note, different samples are played back. The result is a lively and realistic sounding kalimba that mimics the natural variations in tone in a kalimba.

It contains two kalimba instruments you can combine as you like: Kalimba Clean and Kalimba Tape.

Kalimba Clean uses samples recorded directly to my interface through a tube mic preamp. It’s the most natural sounding kalimba.

Kalimba Tape uses those samples after they were recorded to cassette tape. This creates analog warmth and saturation, as well as very slight instability and timing differences.

Combine the two instruments as you wish for the perfect kalimba sound!

The Magic Kalimba

The BF Magic Kalimba Instrument Rack is where the “Magic” happens.

I created 33 new samples by processing the kalimba through a wide range of software and hardware audio effects. I’ve processed and reprocessed the sounds. Stretched them. Granulated them. Reversed them. The result are magical sounds, never made by a kalimba before!

The Macro Variations allow you to craft a range of different sounds with each sample.
