2 - Too Repetitive? Try This In Your Next Song - Uneven Loops

The following is an exercise from my book the 5-Minute Music Producer - 365 Music-Making Activities.

Day 81: Uneven Loop Lengths

Activity:

Create four new tracks. One track plays a 2 bar loop. On the next, a 3 bar loop. On the third, a 4 bar loop, and the fourth, a 5 bar loop. It can help to make the 3 and 5 bar loops percussive rather than melodic. This would mean that the music would have to play for quite a while before it ever loops exactly the same way.

Creating uneven loops is a great way to extend the life of a musical idea without it getting repetitive.

Takeaway:

Even subtle shifts in how our music interacts will help it stay fresh and exciting. I often have a 4 bar chord progression that will have 4 bar loops, 8 bar loops, 12 bar loops, etc. This way there are slightly different feelings each time the 4 bar progression repeats.
